Pro Tips for Brushing Kids' Hair

Lets talk about brushing. Brushing wet hair, brushing dry hair, brushing tangles, brushing brushes! Below are some Pro tips for kids for brushing hair.

Brush Types Needed:

Firm Bristled Paddle- Use a paddle brush that fits comfortably in your hand that you can grip securely. The bristles should be firm, without a lot of flexibility, and not too tightly packed. Choose a brush that is ventilated (meaning there are slats or spaces that go all the way through the brush allowing for even airflow when blow drying). This brush is used to brush dry hair, detangle dry hair, and brush/ style wet hair after is has been detangled with a wide tooth comb.

Soft Bristled Paddle- This brush should also fit comfortably in your hand, but does not need to be ventilated. Bristles should be tightly packed and soft to the touch. This brush is used to brush the scalp and dry hair once hair has been detangled.

Wide Tooth Comb- Use our bubble & squeak wide tooth comb. This comb is perfect for detangling and combing wet hair. Use to evenly distribute conditioner when washing hair and to evenly distribute our Leave- In detangling Therapy before blow drying and styling hair.

Dry Brushing:

  • With a firm bristled paddle brush, always start brushing at the bottom of the hair, specifically the last 2- 3 inches of hair and work your way up the head.
  • Work in 3- 4-inch sections of hair and hold hair at the base of the scalp when brushing to avoid painful pulling.
  • Never lift hair up above the shoulder when brushing. Always hold hair lower than the area it grows out of the scalp to avoid pain.
  • Avoid brushing curly/ textured hair when dry or you’ll end up with frizz.
  • Don't for get your scalp! Use a soft bristled brush to brush the scalp. This removes and set in dirt, or product, distributes healthy oils throughout the hair shaft and stimulates the scalp, helping it grow healthy happy hair.
  • When you encounter a tangle, start at the bottom of the tangle, not the top. Use many light short strokes as opposed to few long, aggressive strokes to try to remove the tangle, to prevent breakage.
  • When encountering a tough or severe tangle use a detangling, moisturizing product on the tangle like our Detangling Leave- in Treatment before brushing, to protect hair from breakage and reduce the time it takes to remove the tangle.
  • Brush your hair when you brush your teeth, in the morning and at night before heading to bed. This will greatly reduce tangles form forming during sleep and make brushing in the morning a much easier task.
  • Keep your brushes clean! Remove accumulated hair from the bristles and wash well with shampoo once a week. This prevents you from distributing old dirt and oil back into the hair. Try removing hair from your brush with another brush or comb (brush your brush).

Wet Brushing:

  • Always towel dry and let hair air dry for 5- 10 minutes before applying product and combing at all. Hair is far more prone to stretching, damage, and breakage due to its reduced strength (about 1/3) when soaking wet.
  • Always start with a wide tooth comb while brushing wet hair. When hair can be combed through with no tangles or resistance, you may move to a paddle or styling brush.
  • When brushing wet hair always, always, always use a moisturizing, detangling product like our Detangling Leave- in Treatment  to protect hair from breakage and damage. Specialized product helps restore pH balance, lubricate and smooth the hair shaft, reducing friction, in turn reducing damage.
  • Always brush tangles out of hair when hair is dry, if a tangle occurs when hair is wet, remove with extra caution with a wide tooth comb like ours.
  • Start combing at the ends of your hair and work your way up to the scalp, combing in short, light strokes. Continue until comb glides through the entire head of hair with zero resistance.
  • If you wear a part in your hair, place it when your hair is wet as you will get a crisper more defined result when hair is dried.
